frequently asked questions

What exactly is the club?

Akron Horror Hounds is much more than a group on meetup! It is a legally recognized business (LLC) run by its founder. There is the club side of things where we host events and publicize them on all social media platforms, and there is the business side of things where we operate a store that sells horror-themed merchandise. Akron Horror Hounds is a community not-for-profit organization where any proceeds made selling goods is put back into the club.

Why some theaters and not others?

Key factors we consider when making movie events are highway accessibility and parking availability with an establishment nearby where club members can mingle after the movie, ideally within walking distance. We had twelve people come to watch NOPE and nine people to watch Evil Dead Rise. Having a restaurant nearby that can easily seat a large group of people when the movie gets out is very important.

How do you choose the movies?

Just ask! If you have a favorite classic movie you’d want as a virtual watch or you are interested in seeing a new release with friendly club members, just let the organizer (Alina) know. Movies get put on the schedule when they have good reviews, they look interesting, or they just happen to be in that month’s theme!

What about live movie screenings or outdoor movies?

Yes, that sounds awesome! We are constantly working on putting those kinds of events together! However, Akron Horror Hounds only wants to host a live movie event if it embodies three fundamental aspects:

  • FREE
  • PUBLIC
  • LEGAL

Hosting a movie party in someone’s backyard is free and legal, but not open to the public (your address would be in paid advertisements to strangers on Facebook). Likewise, having a friend’s business show a private screening for us is very cool, and may be free or public, but it’s not legal.

What makes a movie screening legal? To show a movie ANYWHERE that is not a private residence requires paying a $300 film distribution license. Any park, bar, or business would need to pay this fee or they may get sued by the movie rights holder. The movie rights holder can impose fines of tens of thousands of dollars and effectively shut down the small business.  Akron Horror Hounds tried to show Evil Dead 2 at a local Akron establishment and the business owner was contacted by the movie rights holder and threatened with legal action. It is for this reason that this issue of legality is of the utmost importance to the club.
